Some of the ideas on these pages are from personal resources and others are from other teachers and ESOL websites and are chosen for their relative merit for teaching IELTS.  You are welcome to copy any of theses and I do not claim any ownership to them.  I have only listed to date ideas which I have used and which worked well in class.

Problem Pages

From the Internet look for an "Agony Aunt", this is where people anonymously write in with their real life problems which are sometimes very deep and difficult to imagine including money, death and relationships.  Before giving students the text get them to discuss normal everyday problems related to the text and introduce them to the idea of an "Agony Aunt", then give them the real life problem to read.  Following on have the students discuss the problem in pairs and then in plenary concept check for vocabulary and context.  Finally involve the students in discussion as to how this problem might be solved and what they would do if they had a similar situation.

This exercise also makes a great writing exercise to finish in making up their own real life problem and writing a letter to an imaginary "Agony Aunt", or even a reply.
