Some of the ideas on these pages are from personal resources and others are from other teachers and ESOL websites and are chosen for their relative merit for teaching IELTS.  You are welcome to copy any of these and I do not claim any ownership to them.  I have only listed to date ideas which I have used and which worked well in class.

Reinforcing Vocabulary

Give the students a reading text.  Do not allow them to use a dictionary.

Students read the text and underline words they do not know in pencil and guess whether these unknown words are nouns, verbs, adjectives etc

Next the students guess the meaning of the unknown words from context and in pencil write down their definitions in their notebooks.  In pairs students check and compare notes and make any changes they want to.  Students change pairs and repeat the comparison process.  After the pairs have changed a few times use a plenary session go through the difficult words and elicit meanings of words and type of words.  In pairs students then discuss the main idea of text and supporting ideas.  Concept check main and sub-ideas as well as new vocabulary.

Finally in pairs students write sentences using their new words.  Both students and teacher check the written sentences and discuss any errors.

As the students have to both guess at meaning, compare meanings, write definitions and also use the new vocabulary in written form it is reinforced much better than just giving them the definition.
