Some of the ideas on these pages are from personal resources and others are from other teachers and ESOL websites and are chosen for their relative merit for teaching IELTS.  You are welcome to copy any of these and I do not claim any ownership to them.  I have only listed to date ideas which I have used and which worked well in class.

Didactic Circle

Brainstorm conversation topics example; family, food etc and write them to the board.  In pairs get the students to create ten questions for each topic on the board.  Students and teacher collectively select the best ten questions for each topic from the class.  In a subsequent lesson with a prepared worksheet with the topics and questions listed, get half the students and label them A and place them in a circle or around the edges of the classroom.  Label the other half of the students B and get them to join a partner A.  Student A should ask student B the ten questions on a particular topic, then when finished student B should ask student A the ten questions on a particular topic.  When finished move student B in a clockwise direction so they have a new partner and repeat the process on a new topic.  This moving circle or “onion ring”, as it is sometimes called works really well when practicing dialogues.
