Some of the ideas on these pages are from personal resources and others are from other teachers and ESOL websites and are chosen for their relative merit for teaching IELTS.  You are welcome to copy any of these and I do not claim any ownership to them.  I have only listed to date ideas which I have used and which worked well in class.

Minimal Pair Practice

Select 5 minimal pairs (10 words) and write them to the board in two columns, example;

1          pick                  6            peck

2          sit                     7            set

3          rick                   8            wreck

4          trick                  9            trek

5          met                   0            mit

The teacher using a made-up telephone number pronounces the words corresponding to the numbers above,  756 239876 would be  set/met/peck/sit/Rick/trek/wreck/set/peck  The students then have to tell the teacher the telephone number.  Then working in pairs they practice the same exercise.  When students are fully practiced with the minimal pairs provided then they can switch to a new partner with a new set of words.
