The Listening Module

  N.B The tape is played only once.

  The Four Sections

  Section One

The candidate is given 30 seconds to look at the questions and this is followed by an example showing a correct answer.  A further 30 seconds is then given before the test starts.  This section is usually divided into two parts with a small gap in between the parts and is normally a conversation between two speakers and based on social situations such as travel itinerary, directions or social arrangements. 

  Section Two

Candidates are given 30 seconds to read the questions but there is no given example. This section is normally a monologue and again in two parts with a gap between them and will be a community general interest subject, a news broadcast or a description of facilities.

  Section Three

Candidates are given 30 seconds to read the questions but there is no given example.  This section is in two parts with a small gap between them and is normally two or more speakers.  The topic is often related to student matters such as  a project or career options.

  Section Four

Candidates are given 30 seconds to read the questions and there is sometimes a written example given.  This section is normally in two parts, care must be taken as the gap is sometimes very difficult notice.  The conversation is normally a monologue and in the form of a lecture or a talk of general academic interest.

The Listening Section is played continuously and lasts for about 30 minutes candidates are then given 10 minutes to transfer their answers to an official IELTS Listening answer sheet.  The test increases with difficulty throughout the paper.
