The Reading Module

The Four Sections

Academic Training Module (ATM)   General Training Module (GTM)

GTM materials are taken from, notices, adverts, documents, manuals, leaflets, timetables, books and magazines.

ATM materials are taken from magazines, journals, books and newspapers and of a more academic nature than the GTM texts.

Both modules contain a total of 2,000 – 2,750 words.  Sometimes the passages main contain charts or diagrams.  If a passage has specialized vocabulary there may be a glossary of terms.

Section One GTM

In this section the GTM deals with texts associated with basic social survival tasks in English and retrieving factual information

Section Two GTM

This next section is more elaborate and complex, dealing with training contexts such as a training programme.

Section Three GTM

The text in this section is more descriptive and instructive and has a more complex reading structure in the form of extended prose.

Sections One to Three ATM

The ATM will give a topic of general interest of an appropriate nature for a students studying in University.  One text may contain a diagram, illustration or graph.  One text may contain detailed logical arguments.  The topics are not discipline specific.

  • Matching phrases

Both the GTM and ATM tests are 60 minutes in length and it is recommended that each section should be allocated 20 minutes. The texts in both the ATM and GTM consist of three sections with an overall total of approximately 2,000 – 2,750 words.  With both tests the level of difficulty increases through the paper.  The answers have to be written to an official Reading Answer sheet within the given time frame of 60 minutes.
